The Ending...

I just finished the book.  I was following along fine until the last third or so of Part 3.  I think I have more questions now.

  1. Hopefully you ladies understood this ending better than I did. Can you answer my questions?
    1. I get that the original Elspeth pretended to be her sister and come on to her fiance. But ghost Elspeth says that she carried the twins and originally lived with Jack when they were married until the twins were 4months old. Jack says he never slept with ghost Elspeth. So which twin is the mother of Julia and Valentina?
    2. Why couldn't Valentina get stronger and then scoop out Elspeth's soul and inhabit her own body again? She made her way outside so she could find her.
    3. Seriously, why would all of these people in Robert's life believe his crazy ass stories?

  2. So, I just finished and while I really loved 80% of the novel, I thought that the end was really weak and incredibly weird.

    1) The woman we know as Elspeth (the real Edie) is actually the twins' mother. Jack got drunk at a party, slept with her, and then she carried the twins to term and spent a year in the states.

    2) A seriously good question. I really thought this was how it was going to end.

    3) I don't even know. Do you mean when he tells Jessica and James about what they are doing? Or Sebastian the undertaker? I was thinking that maybe this whole story would end up as a made up story that Robert told to make himself feel better about the death of his girlfriend. Are we meant to believe that he included both sets of twins in his thesis?

  3. So, I am still confused about #1, who is who and how did that all work. Why would they do that? I understand maybe the initial sneak switch to test Jack's faithfulness and true feelings, but who would just allow their children to be taken away like that? Although if it was Elspeth (real Edie) then I can believe it since she then proceeded to kill her own daughter and inhabit her body. Messed up. I can't believe that all those people would accept his stories either, although they were cemetery folk so death and all that is not as strange a subject to believe and take as commonplace.

So, I like it but I didn't. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I wanted to know how it ended. I wish it had ended with Julia almost figuring them out when she met Elspeth (Edie), in Valentina's body and left out the part about Valentina's ghost leaving and all that.

About including both sets of twins in his thesis, that makes sense and I hadn't thought of that. Maybe that is why he left it behind. Where do you think he went?

  4. I have a terrible memory and I don't know if I think he included them in his thesis.
I also would not recommend this book to anyone, but I did finish it. I really enjoyed The Time Traveler's Wife, so I am surprised at how outlandish this story seemed to me. I think Missy said it, that once she swallowed one crazy idea, another popped up and threw her out of the story again. It seemed like there were a few story lines that could have been fleshed out to create seperate novels. The only one I would have liked to read would have been one following Martin.
