The 1st section (through page 115)

I hope you have been able to start the book, Miss.  Either that or you and Chad are buff following your P90X program.  I am just starting the second section of the book.  Below is my (vague) impressions of the first section.

  1. Man, I would not have liked to have been Calpurnia. What that heck? The queen of Egypt "stops by" for months at a time with a her husbands son when she can't provide him with an heir? And she is staying at their place? No thanks.

The pace definitely picked up for me, probably because I can differentiate the different characters now. I didn't realize there were some pictures in this book. Egypt has me totally stunned. I would love to go there. I wish there wasn't so much animosity toward Americans. It doesn't feel safe to go so many places. I guess soon I should learn about how things started to go really downhill for Cleopatra after her 2nd visit to Rome. We don't hear much about her brother husband even though she dragged him along on her loooong trip to Rome. We do see her imprisoned sister being paraded down the street. It's hard to tell if there were ever any warm familial feelings toward each other.
Well, off to Indian food with my parents.

  2. Yeah, now that I am done with the book, I still feel pretty confused about what it meant to be family in Egyptian culture. I mean, Cleopatra seemed semi-concerned with the well-being of her kids toward the end of her life...and yet, Caesarian was at that age where he should be thinking about getting rid of mommy. She made that big deal about being called a father loving, country loving, blah, blah, blah, but no matter what your relationship was, watch out if you get in her way.

Except for Antony, of course. 'Cause that was true love. :)
